“Everyone can learn to golf at Ager.”
Myka Murrell first discovered a love for golf at Jim Ager Golf Course. Her journey began on the mini golf course at the age of four before her mom encouraged her to give traditional golf a try. What started as an idea quickly became much more. Jim Ager quickly became, in Myka’s words, both a place “to play and to learn”
A fourth grader with a big smile and a kind, determined spirit, Myka approaches the game of golf in her own way. Playing one-handed, she navigates the course with an eye and a form that has landed her an excellent course reputation–with a birdie to prove it. Myka holds two third place prizes for her summer golf leagues, and is continually seeking new challenges.
Myka is supported not only by her parents, who take her to neighboring golf courses and tournaments to be closer to the game, but also by her coaches in the program. Two coaches in particular, Coach Sam and Coach Nic, have mentored Myka and encouraged her to accomplish significant feats in a significantly technical sport. Though for Myka, the love for the game surpasses the accolades she has accumulated in playing.
She uses the bunker as a ramp, scored a birdie on Jim Ager’s hole five, and has chipped in for par. Myka has even beat her coach on hole five, crediting the supportive environment that has allowed her to grow in the sport and given her the ability to compete with those who taught her. The game has been just as much about encouragement and fun as it has been about improving her skills.
To Myka, golf is more than recreation. It’s a way to stay active, challenge herself, and most importantly, have fun. Whether she’s lining up a putt, practicing her swing, or celebrating another win, Myka reminds everyone that determination (and a love for the game) can take you a long way. As Myka says, “just get out there and do it.”
