The Project

Restoring a Historic Connection

Built in 1967 to commemorate Nebraska’s 100th anniversary, Centennial Mall extends north from the State Capitol for seven blocks. By 2009, this important public space was ready for a major update. We led a $9.6 million campaign to restore and reimagine this historic mall.

With support from the City of Lincoln, Lancaster County, the State of Nebraska, and many private contributors across the state, we brought new life to this space. We are especially thankful for a $2 million gift from Hebron native Glenn Korff who sadly passed away in 2013.

A Space for All

Over the years, Centennial Mall has become a gathering place for many significant moments in our state’s history. After September 11, 2001, it naturally became a place where our community came together to grieve and reflect. Each year, 35,000 fourth-graders visit as part of their Nebraska history studies.

More Than Just a Mall

The redesigned Centennial Mall celebrates Nebraska’s legacy of stewardship – past, present, and future. It’s a journey through our state’s natural and civic history:

We the People (“K” to “L” Streets)

Elements on this block celebrates Nebraska’s democratic journey. Here, you’ll find a beautiful plaza that mirrors our Capitol’s north steps, honoring the citizens and leaders who’ve shaped our state.

Mosaic of Nebraskans (“M” to “P” Streets)

The three central blocks highlight the people, cultures, and organizations that have come together to create a social quilt of Nebraskans. The stretch features special pavers, honoring loved ones and community groups.

Our Home Nebraska (“L” to “M” Streets)

This block is all about Nebraska’s natural resources and the importance of stewardship. Walk across a plaza-sized map of our state, complete with rivers and ecosystems.

Sparking the Good Life (“P” to “R” Streets)

Right by the University, these two blocks include a playful water feature, inspiring art alcove, and outdoor seating area that capture the spirit of creativity and learning.

Looking Ahead

We invite you to explore this revitalized space and learn about our state’s rich history.
